Recently, my 14 year old sister, who is in the EIGHTH GRADE did something huge. Several times after being "dress coded" for shirts, dresses and outfits that have been "distracting" to boys and other students, that she HAD FELT BEAUTIFUL IN, she finally stood up for herself and made a comeback. Rose was asked to leave school 1-2 times for not changing her shirt. She was given two options per the vice principle: to change and "stop being ridiculous." Or to go home. My sister called my mom who was immediately shocked that she was dress coded for that shirt. That SAME MORNING rose went to school, my mom COMPLIMENTED her on her new shirt and told her she looked beautiful. Apparently, the Vice Principle didn't think so. After numerous incidents, and complications rose decided to write a letter. The letter went as followed:
To whom it may concern,
In my humble opinion, I believe the dress code, specifically at Masconomet, is incredibly sexist, one sided, and rape culture enforced. If I were to gather all of the students in the middle school, and have all of the boys who sag their pants, wear hats, tank tops, muscle shirts of all sorts, and offensive graphic tees, raise their hand if they have ever been dress coded, I can nearly guarantee only one or two would raise their hands. Now if I asked all of the girls, who wear similar tank tops, off the shoulder shirts, and shorts, countless hands would go up. This small experiment goes to demonstrate how the dress code is sexist. It sends the message to all of us girls to ‘cover up’ so we do not distract males, because “boys will be boys” when in reality, we do not dress for boys. Girls do not wake up every morning, hoping to impress the boys at school, or show off for boys, and even other girls. There is no competition. We dress how we do for ourselves, to feel beautiful and confident. There should not be a rule that limits or prohibits our ability to do so.
In the student handbook, under Each Student Will Be Expected To, rule number 7, states, “demonstrate behaviors conducive to good health and acquire knowledge regarding disease and disease prevention, mental health, substance abuse, and sexuality.” In this rule I would like to elaborate on mental health. For me and many other girls, this has so much to do with the dress code. Staff and faculty should be teaching and encouraging us how to love ourselves and love our bodies. Instead, Masco is demonstrating the opposite. How would you feel if you got dressed one morning, you put on a shirt that makes you feel so confident and your self esteem skyrocket, only to have to come to school and be told to change? We feel ashamed, insecure, and embarrassed, like we do not deserve to feel good about ourselves. This is what the dress code is enforcing.
This also applies to rule number 2 under To Provide the Proper Environment for Student Learning. If a girl’s shoulders, legs, bra strap, or skin, etc. go as far as ‘distract’ any male students or someone else’s learning, shouldn’t that be their issue to contemplate and deal with? Going to a public school comes with people and how they choose to learn. When it’s hot outside and we are in classrooms with no air circulation or air conditioning, it becomes difficult to sit in a sticky chair behind a desk for 7 hours in pants and a sweater. We should stop teaching girls to change outfits so they do not have to fear boys, and start teaching boys to respect girls and their bodies. This is simply perpetuating rape culture and oppressive objectification. Since when is it a female's responsibility to make sure boys can concentrate on their school work? I am a 14 year old girl. If you are sexualizing me, then you are the problem. One day during lunch, I was dress coded by the vice principal, and sat in his office for nearly an hour and a half. Because of this, not only did I miss half of lunch, but also 3 of my classes. I attend a school where the exposure of my shoulders is more important than my education. When you tell a girl to cover up or change, she does, because she does not want further trouble. I, for one, am not her.

I will be looking forward to hearing back from you and thank you for your time.
Rose Piazza

Rose printed this out, respectively handed it to the principal, vice principal, and superintendent, and patiently waited for a response. Days went by and nothing. She asked the guidance counselor if they read it, and she said yes they have viewed it, but aren't responding. Rose gave it 2 more days. After talking with her mom, dad and sisters she came up with a plan. Since the 3 most important people of the school didn't care, she knew her fellow peers would. I took her to staple after school one day and we printed 250 copies of her letter. The following morning, (this morning) we went into Masconomemt Regional Middle school and a copy of Roses letter's hanging out of each students locker. Not to mention, 15 girls asked if they could help participate in putting her letters up. Halfway through we got stopped and asked what we were doing. Those same two teachers went to the office and told the vice principle what was going on. The vice principal came out and starting taking the letters out of the students lockers that were hanging out. Before he could get half of the letters out, we pushed them in the lockers completely. At this point in time, students ROSE HAD NEVER TALKED TO were coming up to her and hugging her, saying thank you, God Bless You, You're amazing, it's about time someone sticks up for this, THE LIST GOES ON. What's funny was the middle school boys were involved. They completely agreed. 20 minutes went by and everyone was talking about it, Rose was getting praised and complemented for standing up for her rights and what she believes in. I can't wait to see what happens from here, but ROSE, no matter what happens, just know one thing: your family, friends, and classmates are on your side. We have YOUR BACK. We support you 200%. When the faculty is called out on one of their flaws they know is wrong, they get defensive. THEY ARE WRONG, and I, your sister, am so freaking proud of you, a 14 year old for writing this amazing letter and sticking up for what you believe in. You inspire me and so many others. I love you till the end. sexy evening dresses ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ ❤️
